Box Game with Shuttle

Tactical Problem: Locating the open space within the playing area

Skill development: Anticipation of opponents “play” to the open area

Game/Task:

1 v.1 Box Game

Conditions:

  • toss must be above shoulder height
  • after playing the shuttle you must move outside of the playing area before moving back in
  • shuttle is not allowed to come in contact with the floor

Diagram:

       (a)                                      (b)

Organizational Points:

  • students are in groups of 2 or 3
  • one retrieves four cones and a shuttle, the other locates a playing area
  • cones and shuttles are set out prior to instruction and spaced apart
  • shuttles should be contained

Teaching Points:

Ø      locate the open space in the playing area

Ø      anticipate opponents “play” to that area

Modifications / Refinements / Progressions:

  • students are able to change the dimensions of the playing area
  • if it is too easy then make the playing area larger
  • too difficult - decrease the playing area

Find the appropriate dimensions that will challenge the students and provide success at the same time.

  • groups of three will alternate in numerical order (occasionally switch up the order)
  • students may progress to “sending” the shuttle with their hand - this may prove too painful and difficult to reach the desired height
